Become a Morning Person in 8 Steps

We’ve all been there before, lying in bed with your alarm clock blaring, trying to decide whether to get up or just hit snooze. Mornings are hard to deal with for most people, and unless you’re already an early riser, you might wonder how people can get up so early in the day.

Becoming a morning person is no simple task, but it can come with a lot of benefits! If you’re trying to make the switch to the early bird lifestyle, here are some handy things you might want to try.

Step 1: Work Backward From Your Alarm

If you know what time you have to get up in the mornings, one easy way to get out of bed on the first try is to make sure you get enough sleep! Getting the recommended 7 to 9 hours of sleep can help you get the rest you need and prepare you for the day ahead.

By working backward from your alarm, you can choose the perfect bedtime for your routine.  Following this also helps you avoid staying up too late! If you know the exact time you need to get to bed, you can plan ahead and get some extra sleep.

Speaking of going to bed on time…

Step 2: Move Gradually

When you’re switching your alarm or pushing back your bedtime, make sure you ease yourself into the new routine. Try to change by altering your bedtime by 20 minutes each night until you reach your desired time.

Gradually, this can help your body adjust to the time change while still working towards a healthier sleep schedule. After a while, you’ll find that you can wake up early with ease after a few weeks of making these minor adjustments.

Once you have your bedtime taken care of...

Step 3: Avoid the Screens

It might take some getting used to, but when it comes to bedtime, you should put your phone away! When we use phones, laptops, or TVs right before we go to bed, the blue light can upset our sleep cycles

Similarly, if you check your phone first thing in the morning, it can be holding you back from the morning person you want to be! A study has shown that immediately checking your phone in the morning can increase drowsiness and sleep disturbance.

That being said, between Netflix binges, social media updates, and checking emails each morning, it can be pretty challenging to avoid screens. Making this transition might take some getting used to, but it could go a long way towards becoming a morning person.

Step 4: Let There Be Light!

While we should be avoiding lights and screens before we go to sleep, adding some light to our mornings can help! Our sleep patterns, also known as circadian rhythms, are tied to light and dark. With this in mind, waking up to natural light can help reset circadian rhythms and create healthier sleep schedules.

You can achieve this by letting in light through your window or investing in a “sunrise” alarm clock, which simulates sunlight to wake you up gently.

If you still have trouble getting out of bed…

Step 5: Sound the Alarm

One of the most significant barriers to waking up is the infamous “snooze” button. When you can safely snooze your alarm from the warmth and comfort of your blankets, it can be almost impossible to get up.

To counteract that, try moving your alarm clock somewhere away from your bed!  When it goes off in the morning, you’ll have to get out of bed to turn it off, and voila, you’re up!  While it might not be the most pleasant introduction to your morning, it will get you out of bed in a hurry.

Unfortunately, getting out of bed is only half the battle. When you’re learning how to become a morning person, you also need something to do when you wake up…

Step 6: Get Excited!

If you’ve mastered waking up and getting out of bed on time, you now need to work on putting all that morning time to good use! One of the best ways to do this is to plan your morning the night before.

When you schedule a pleasant morning routine, you prepare something to look forward to when you wake up. When you hear your alarm in the morning, you’re armed with a plan of action, and getting your morning going can be a lot easier.

When you’re planning this routine, consider…

Step 7: Step Up Your Mornings

When making your perfect morning routine, make sure it’s tailored to your life and your needs. You can add in morning yoga and meditation, or maybe some reading with your coffee. As long as it makes you happy, add it in! If you’re looking for some morning routine ideas

Creating a routine can also help you figure out why you are becoming a morning person.  Do you want to get up early to get ahead on work? Are you trying to find some more alone time in your day? Do you just want to see the sunrise?

Whatever the reason, when you start your day with a good routine that works for you, it can genuinely improve the rest of the day.

Step 8: Be Consistent

In this journey from night owl to champion of the morning, the most significant factor of them all might be consistency. Learning how to be a morning person isn’t just about fixing your internal clock or embracing early mornings; it’s about making a real, positive change in your life.

Many wildly successful people swear by their early morning routines, but they only reached that point by building the practice consistently. It can be tricky if you’re not a morning person, but with possible benefits to your mental health and more time in your schedule, consistency can be the key to everything.
